Scenes of a Parallel Life, named after an unfinished series of experimental films by Jacques Rivette, is an ongoing publication collecting writing on different work in the moving image.
This series of texts is attempting to take an experimental route to writing about the moving image, avoiding a critical approach, instead emphasising practice, looking at how different works function, extracting ideas from a wide variety of works that practitioners could use, and trying to think beyond cinema.
Other ideas so far have included approaching the body of work in the moving image as a map to move through unstable representations of space and time, searching for secret passageways and lost fragments; trying to read works beyond the idea of the author; and experimenting with different voices, as well as collaging together different forms of writing including poetry and stories, in the text.
So far texts have looked at all manner of material including commercial films, video art, television series, viral videos, adverts, plays, songs and poems.
